Reduced nasal discomfort

Birch is a typical springtime wind pollinator in Hokkaido. Hay fever is mainly cedar pollen allergy in Japanese mainland, however in Hokkaido it is birch pollen allergy. A study showed that adult male and female subjects with runny nose, sneezing, and other discomforts during the period when birch pollen is in the air took shiso extract, which suppressed nasal itchiness.

Japanese Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 46(11): 1897-1907 (2018)

Clinical study

Thirty-nine healthy adult males and females were separated into two groups, one group taking Shiso Extract 300 mg/day and the other group taking a placebo. Subjects took the test food for 8 weeks from the birch pollen dispersal period to the post-pollen dispersal period, and blood allergy-related indicators were measured as well as a score evaluation (VAS) on eye and nasal symptoms.

Results

Continuous intake of Shiso Extract was shown to reduce nasal itchiness leading to a reduction in nasal discomfort.
